UNDRR

UNDRR is the United Nations’ focal point for disaster risk reduction and oversees the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. It supports countries in its implementation, monitors and shares what works in reducing existing risk and preventing the creation of new risk.

UNDRR convenes partners and coordinates activities to create a safer and more resilient communities. It brings governments, partners and communities together to reduce disaster risk and losses to ensure a safer and more sustainable future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded the world what the Sendai Framework for Disaster Rick Reduction 2015-2030 is all about: risk is systemic, interconnected, and cascading.

Climate change is driving increased risk across all countries, and unpredictable hazards can have devastating cascading impacts on all sectors, with long-lasting, debilitating socio-economic and environmental consequences.

The interactions between climate change trends, ecosystem fragility, disease outbreaks, rapid unplanned urbanization, mass displacement and geopolitical instability, fuelled by the interconnectivity of communications, trade, financial systems and politics, mean that shocks, stresses, and crises reverberate globally.

If we want to get on top of sustainable development then we must move from managing disasters, traditionally done reactively to managing risk – proactively.

UNDRR ARISE UAE is a private sector initiative, which in conjunction with the UNDRR, works towards a resilient, prosperous future where fewer lives are lost to disasters, capital assets and investments are risk-informed, and infrastructure is resilient to natural and man-made hazards. Members voluntarily commit to support and implement the Sendai Framework Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030, aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Paris Climate Agreement, New Urban Agenda and Agenda for Humanity.

In doing so, ARISE advocates for risk-informed development by encouraging and supporting the private and public sectors to put in place policies and practices to reduce disaster risk and losses. It mobilizes and facilitates the private sector to carry out risk-informed investments and to engage in business practices that build resilience, prevent social and economic losses and enhance recovery from disasters, in line with the Sendai Framework.

UN Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) UNDRR’s regional efforts help to improve the relevance and understanding of DRR in the region and promote the integration of risk reduction in regional and national policies and plans such as on climate change adaptation, sustainable development, urban development and city planning
